HOLIDAY
FLATLET (GITE) PLUS BED
AND BREAKFAST HOLIDAYACCOMMODATION (CHAMBRE D’
HÔTE):
The choice is yours – you can use the accommodation as a holiday flatlet and come and go, cook snacks/meals as you please. Or you can be looked after with breakfast provided and your rooms cleaned daily. The accommodation is part of a newly renovated, 18th Century stone town house. Many original features of the country kitchen are still in place. The house is five minutes walk from the main street, shops, pizza take-away, cold drinks machine, post office, pharmacies, supermarkets, bakers, fishing tackle shop, bike hire shop, hairdressers, estate agents, etc. There is a lively outdoor market on Thursdays and Sundays where many delicious, fresh products (cheeses, olives, oysters, cakes, fruit, vegetables, pates, sausages) can be purchased. In Saint Chinian there are 3 bars/street cafes (one with a television). Three of the restaurants have outside eating areas also. The house is situated on the quieter side of town, across the river. Saint Chinian is in an open valley with a limestone ridge on one side and the foothills of the Black Mountains on the other. The Vernazobre river runs through the town. It has rock pools, cascades and in summer, looks like a tropical paradise with fig, walnut and plane trees lining its banks. You can walk to the swimming spot from the house. You can also walk from the house in any direction and be in the countryside within minutes. There are good country roads (for cycling) and well-marked walk ways. The mountains are covered in Mediterranean oaks, pines and chestnut trees. The limestone ridge is open, wild “garrigue” covered in thyme, rosemary, juniper, lavender and has a myriad of wild flowers and butterflies. Saint Chinian is in a famous wine growing valley and the local Cave Co-operative has won the Paris Gold Award for best wines for 2 years running. A large selection of wines can be tasted and bought from the farms or the Cave (which is a few streets away from the house). Wine can be bought cheaply from the barrel in the Cave. There are two red wines (both excellent – 11% and 12%) and a rosè. Because of the particularly hot summer last year, this year’s wine is particularly good. Wine can also be bought in cartons, bottles etc. The closest beach (Valras Plage) is half an hours drive away. There are hundreds of kilometres of beautiful sandy beaches on the Med, dotted with fishing towns (Valras, Agde, Sete, Palavas) which have many seafood restaurants. The Pyrenees and the Camargue are within easy driving distance. Historic towns such as Avignon, Baux, St. Remy, Carcassone, Narbonne and Perpignan are also with reach. Cathar castles and Roman ruins are open to tourist visits. Beziers and Montpellier are large shopping centres as well as being interesting towns.
